Hola from Paraguay!

Hola! Hows everybody back home?

Life here is grand. We get an hour of email a week which is sick (though I´ve already used about 25 minutes on various stuff. Lo siento). But after I write the president I´m good to go for extra long emails.  The keyboard is wierd tho so it takes a little longer to type. A bunch of the keys are in the wrong place. lol. Sorry, but I forgot any letters to respond to back at the house, so those´ll have to wait till next week. Also, we get dear elders like 2 weeks after they´re sent, and real mail takes like a month or two. So yah. You can send a weekly email if you want, and then everyone else Dear Elder if they still happen to care. It might take a while for my letters to get back but whateves.

Ugh. Where to start! We spent P-day and tuesday packing like madmen. It was nuts. Just trying to wrap eveything up, get all our stuff done, collect and pack etc. Hopefully Mackenzie got my scrips. The suitcases were all right on the line of being too heavy. I weighed and re-weighed a tonne of times trying to get them just right. The final weigh in at the airport was 50, 49, and 40 lbs. for each of them. Ridiculous. I even had to put a couple of things in someone elses bag to keep from having to pay overweight charges. Tuesday night was full of goodbyes and last minute packing, but we managed to get to bed on time. Wednesday morning we got up at 3 AM and took all our bags to the travel office, got our info about the flights, and got on the bus. Got to the airport and checked in. For some it was their first time on a plane. Crasy stuff.

Flights went well. The first one we all sat by missionaries. The second one I sat by two strangers who were nice and I talked to them about going on a mission. Sorry the phones were lame. It was fun to call home tho. Some people talked for at least 2 hours which was kinda annoying, but whatever. Toy Story 3 was playing on the plane to Miami. It was super distracting even with no sound, but I justify seeing maybe a quarter of it, because while I tried to write a couple letters on the plane, my eyes wandered to the movie while I thought, instead of the not-appropriate magazine that the guy was reading beside me. lol

Miami was hot, but thankfully short. The plane to Buenas Aires was pretty huge, and as luck would have it, I was in the very middle of the middle section (5 people wide). So I was stuck in my seat the whole time. But the lady and her husband beside me only spoke spanish so it was fun to talk to them. Ah. I´m going too slow. K. Anyways, transfered in Argentina and made it to Paraguay alive. We were picked up by the mission president and his wife. They are very friendly and nice and speak pretty descent English which is super cool.

My first impressions of Paraguay: There were a suprising number of descent cars, there were quite a few dogs in the parking lot which was crasy (I just wanted to pet them all. They are super submissive and just sit at your feet. But they´re kinda dirty too so you just dont touch them...). It was raining when we showed up so it wasn´t too hot, but it got ridiculous pretty quick and I´ve been dying ever since. The roads here are crasy, and the office elders that drove us around fit right in. lol. Half the roads are paved, and the other half are just made of rocks jammed in the ground. Pretty bumpy. The mission office is in this chapel in the middle of town. Pretty sick. They fed us some descent food there. We spent most of the day just getting oriented there. There was a baptism that evening which we attended. Cool, but we were so tired from the plane ride (we all slept, but it wasn´t good or really for too long), that it was hard to stay awake.

We slept in a house full of beds together the first night. It was chill. Things are pretty descent as far as houses go. They aren´t really all that nice, but they´re bearable. All the floors have tile and the shower just drains into the floor. Not like a tub underneath it or anything.

The next day we met our companions. My companion is Elder Lee from Salt Lake City. He´s really chill. Our area is called Moroni B. Its in the middle of town and is pretty much the richest area in all of Paraguay. Our house actually has air conditioning, we get fed every day for lunch basically (lunch is the biggest meal here), and in most of our area everyone has a car. Kinda ridiculous, but maybe it´ll be good and help ease me into Paraguayan lifestyle. There is a part of our area where houses are just randomly put up and its pretty cool. Theres random animals everywhere which is sweet. Dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, lots of different birds, some people have parrots as pets, giant ants etc. The people are really cool and friendly. Its really hard to talk to people right now and so I usually just sit and listen while Elder Lee talks, but I´m working on figuring out their different accent and contributing more. We do lots of contacting in our area (which we didn´t really practice much at the MTC), and so I´m working on that, but with the people being all rich here they don´t usually let us in no matter what you say. We managed to get two people to come to church this week tho and we taught some legit lessons which was really cool. I don´t know what else to talk about really. Its hard to discribe it all. In some places the houses are just put up wherever and you have to walk around and about and through someones front porch to get to a whole group of houses.

I´m having a great time. Even though talking is a real challenge, I think I´ll start to be able to get involved in conversations more pretty quick. The hardest time for me is just that everyone mumbles like crasy and if they start rambling I just get super lost. But I got faith that I´ll pick it up quick, and I´m just trying my hardest, so I should get it sooner or later.

Elder Lee leaves a transfer and a half from now (getting back in time for school). So with that in mind, I´ll probably be here for at least 4 and a half months, maybe 6 months. But thats fine by me. There´s some really cool people here. I just have to make sure that I don´t get too used to living the high life here in chuchi (guarani for rich) land. We have tonnes of money left over because we don´t ride too many buses and we get free lunch every day, and so we can buy snacks like every day. We ate out today and I accidentally ordered some seafood pasta instead of the spagetti (long story). Anyways, we found out after that the wierd things in in were calamari and something like muscles I think. I´ve also had my first 2 real paraguayan meals and some chipa (paraguayan legit food).

Anyways, times up. Love you lots. Loving the mission. The language will come. lol. Keep it real.

Love,

Elder Humphreys

DARN NEW TECHNOLOGY

Whatever happened to the days of a good old pay phone and a collect phone call home???

Today is travel day.  We wondered if we would hear from Ross this morning as our wake-up call, but he let us sleep (no time to call in SLC).
Around 11:30 we started hearing his voice.  Apparently the phones in Chicago O'Hare airport don't allow you to make collect phone calls.  So, the automated operator would tell me that Ross or Elder Humphreys (in his own voice) wanted to talk to me, and that I could pay by punching in my credit card number if I wished to accept.  Fine.  Only problem is that after I would give them my number, the phone would disconnect.  After trying that 2 or 3 times, I tried phoning back the pay phone.  That doesn't work either!  Finally Ross went and got a bunch of quarters, but apparently only enough for about a 3 minute phone call.  Arrghh!  Finally he got the leftovers of another Elder's calling card.  A 150 minute card, with 2 minutes left on it.  So another short chat.  2 more attempts at collect calls (I'm starting to wonder who will be shopping with my card that I sent over the airwaves).  Then with only a few minutes before boarding his connecting flight, another Elder shared his calling card.  He had talked for 2 or 3 hours, but still had about 400 minutes on his card.   So we (Emma, Ross, and I) managed to talk for about 10 minutes until all the other Elders started to board the plane.  Too short!

So what did we learn??

He's doing great!!  He sounds awesome, and very happy and excited to get going!
There are 14 Elders travelling to Paraguay together.  I imagine that would be quite a sight.
He's been very healthy (with the exception of his time in isolation - see older post), but nervous at how sick he may be for the next 2 years.  I figure that it is good to be afraid, then he will be more careful about what he eats and drinks.
When I asked him if he's been homesick at all, he said no, not really.  He's really glad that he lived away from home last year, so that he was used to being away.  It's made it so much easier (for both him and us).

Well, that was about it.
Next time we hear from him it will be from South America!  Crazy!

Please keep the letters coming to him - he loves them all, and hopes you understand if he hasn't written you back yet.  It sounds like they keep these elders busy busy.

p.s.
update as of 7:00pm.  Elder Humphreys made it to Miami safe and sound and is now in the air on the way to Argentina.  He made another unsuccessful attempt at a collect call, and then borrowed another calling card for another 7 minute call  home.  Bruce, Marissa, and Erica were happy to get to hear his cheerful voice.   He said he gave away some coathangers and a bottle of shampoo, and managed to get his luggage to 50lbs, 49lbs, and a 40 lb. carry-on, hahahah.  I think he also put a couple of things into another Elder's suitcase who hadn't reached his limit.  Canadian stuff must weigh more than American stuff.  I don't know how they did it, because Ross stuck to the packing list - nothing extra!  Oh well, what's done is done.

A CHANGE OF ADDRESS

(Ross sent a very brief email earlier in the day to arrange a time for "the phone call" when he flies out to Paraguay on Wednesday.  Apparently this cut into his regular email time - so the letter is a bit shorter).

Sorry, but I'm down to less than half the normal time I have so I'll have to be brief. Sorry to all those who just can't wait to get a letter from me... lol. Things are crasy here right now. I'm having a heck of a time finding enough time to be packed and ready by wednesday.

We had a health and safety meeting this week. Hopefully we'll only be sick for half the time we're out instead of the whole time. lol

Our big speaker this week was Richard C. Edgley, 1st councilor in the presiding bishopric. Pretty sick. I'd tell you what he said but me notebook is with my teacher right now...haha. Hopefully tomorrow the Prophet will come. Its his last chance before we leave.

Thanks so much for the package! I saw the price and felt kinda bad. However, although the wrapping on the box was shredded and mangled, the insides were still good. Everybody loved a taste of some good ol' Canadian food. So thank ya all kindly! Much appreciated.

This week we got to host. It was fun being the very first part of the MTC that people got to know. Helped a couple sister missionaries with their bags and an elder who's going to halifax. His twin was going to edmonton. Both from California. Crasy. I forgot his name tho....haha

Our teachers been acting out a roll of an alcoholic guy for us. Its actually been really cool to help him out, as we've had to talk with him every day to help him with his addiction. Kinda ridiculous, but at the same time, its been really cool to actually start feeling like you're helping someone instead of just teaching fake lessons. Exciting to think I'll get to do that full time in a couple of days here.

Sad news. First Elder I've known to leave early made his departure this week. Kind of a sad reality. He had just been having a hard time getting into it, didn't think he was feeling the spirit, felt like he was wasting the lords time etc etc. Anyways, kinda just reminded everyone that although we all seem solid that everyone has their struggles. Hopefully I don't have to see too many more leave.... :(

Made THE SICKEST goal ever in soccer. Midfield, lobbed it over everyone (including the goalie) and right into the back of the net. Just thought I'd share my defining moment in MTC soccer. It was big. lol

If my memory serves me correctly, T-Switty's new album should have come out this week. Hope you're all livin it up on my behalf. hahaha

We had a really nice testimony meeting the other night. Its going to be really sad to say goodbye to my district cuz I love'em all. But I'll probs see them in Paraguay so nbd I guess.

Had our departure devotional. Its really here. Kinda crasy. I think everyone here (myself included) are having various degrees of excitement and nervousness simultaneously. Its a battle between wanting to get out of here, see the world and help others, and Not being able to speak to anyone, being sick as a dog etc etc.

Anyways. Wow. Time flys when you type. Dad - I met that Craig Cosgrove guy in the gym. Apparently he works here. The convo started off my flames shirt.

Thanks to Carmen for the letter! Much appreciated.

Anyways, bout time to wrap up. I'm excited to go. I'll let you all know how it is next week. Love you all. I'll try and call as soon as I have a chance. Keep it real everyone. Wish me luck (or prayers work great too...lol)

Love,

Elder Humphreys

SLC FIELD TRIP and TRAVEL PLANS

Hola! Qué tal?
So this week seems like there isn't a lot to talk about on one hand. At the same time there are a couple big highlights that we had.

The field was closed this week cuz there's a giant sinkhole in it due to a busted pipe or something. Long story short - the gym is sooooo not fun. lol. We patiently await the day when it opens back up.

In class we spent a day learning about other religions so that we could teach non-christian types. That was really fun, especially cuz hno. coles knows all about muslims and stuff and had all the outfits and everything. Speaking of other religions tho...lol. Apparently my companion is into "Chi" and using "Natural Oils" and stuff. He thinks I'm crasy cuz I'm a big sceptic of that kinda stuff... so I just had to get him back by telling my family that he's a little crasy that way too. lol

The fireside this week was good. A little bit of a letdown because the promise of a high ranking general authority was way off. But he was cool anyways. Elder Newenshwander (an Emeritus 70) talked to us. I'd tell you all about it, but I forgot all the notes on it back in my room. haha.

Had my first crasy snack this week. You would have probably thought that I'd have to wait till I got to Paraguay to eat crasy food, but you thought wrong. A guy in my district got some "Larvettes" from his girlfriend and so we all ate at least one. Basically it was just a dehydrated meal-worm with some mexican spice flavour on it. It prettly much just tasted like a little bit of crunch and then bug exoskeleton stuck in your teeth... fun stuff.

Ooo. Fun story. I had heard that international missionaries get to make a trip to the Salt Lake temple before they leave. Also fun is that they have started (within the last couple of months) letting the missionaries do a session there. Anyways, I was expecting an invite, but caught word that they wouldn't be doing a trip the week that I was scheduled to leave. So I ran down to the International Office, and they were kind enough to book me a seat on the bus. The very next day I got to go on a field trip. It was kinda ridiculous because there are people from the states here that live further away than me, but I didn't particularly care. I hung out all day with a guy from New Zealand, a British chap, and a South African (all of which didn't know any Canadians

Okay. Sorry the computer is going screwy on me. I'll try my best to make this work. Anyways. The temple was super cool. I loved the live-factor which made me notice things that I wouldn't have seen before.  It was also just really nice inside and I really appreciated all the work that went into that.  Everyone else really loved temple square and such, but having been before, the temple was definately the highlight

And if that wasn't sweet enough, WE GOT OUR TRAVEL PLANS!! Super exciting. Turns out (as I think I mentioned last time), we'll actually be leaving 5 days earlier than planed. On the 20th we fly outa here, head to Chicago for a 4 hour layover, and then to Miami for a short while. Then its all the way off to Buenas Aires. Crasy!  As for making a phone call, I think the best time would be in Chicago at like 11:30 (or maybe a little bit after),  and thats Chicago time. Hope that works out okay. I could call in the morning, but it would be really early and I don't know how long I could talk for. Let me know. I got 9 more days and 1 more email before I'm out of here. Insane. I'm going to die when I get there cuz its so hot and I cant say nearly enough Spanish, but I'm excited for sure

I remembered to take my Dukoral the other day. I'm going to be a little bit behind on the doses and probably won't be immune by its standards until the day or after I get there. Any secret I should know? Should I take the second dose early or man up or what? I've so far just followed directions, I was jsut one day short of the 2 weeks before mark

Anyways, I'm running outa time and this computer is killing me. So sorry if I don't get to everything here. I'm just hoping you can read it all when I'm done. lol

Happy Birthday to Cache Jaclynn and Jeffrey! Sorry if I'm a little late. The days all kinda just blend here.... 1

Noooooo!!!!! Sooooo sad about my jury summons. If you can, make sure you check off the box that says I'll do it in two years. haha

Marissa - pj's are yours (until i return that is) LOL, life is good. My fav scrip I read today was D+C 68:2-5. I thought it was cool cuz anything the spirit tells me to say on my mission is basically as good as the scriptures. Nbd. haha Oh, and I had to lay off the juice a little, tho I still love it. I just have to keep under the 140 mark and that was the first to go.... LOL

Haha. Its true what they say. My serious face prevailed in that song. Lo siento. Hope that didn't offend anyone. If only they had showed me every other time. I swear i was smiling....yah

Chloe - thank you so much for the letter!! Hope Jaclyn loved her pres

Mom, the cheese did explode. Fortunately I was only minorly injured. You can talk to the instigator of the explosion if you'd like to know more

Dad - Stamps game? Seriously! Arg!!! haha. Some kids are so lucky these days. haha. I agree. I think the talk by Elder Lawrence was great. Maked me greatful to have great parents.  We watch conference live here in the gym. I saw sat mornin, and sunday afternoon.

Everyone here loved Elder Gibbs letter btw. They thought the stories were funny when I couldn't resist but share.

Oh, they made me give the talk in church this week. Thankfully it was all in Spanish so noone realized how lame it was. It was mostly straight out of Preach My Gospel haha

Anyways, times up. Love you lots! Call you in 9 days. Keep it real. Being a missionary is da Bomb (yah, i'm that cool)

Yours truly/Love,

Elder Humphreys

BIG NEWS

Howdy! Seems like forever ago since I last wrote... anyways, I'm sure you all want to hear about conference... so I'll leave that till the end. Hopefully it'll mean I have more time to talk about it. lol

Dad - Crasy that the guy you helped died... how wierd was that? lol. Thanks for not losing Toby, but sounds like you had a fun time searching. Maybe if you keep walking him like that he'll be a pro in no time. I guess we'll see. I wonder why they haven't given you a new companion. My guess is that they couldn't find anyone good enough to replace me... haha. Just kidding. No being prideful.

Grandma - That would be super cool if you learned Spanish. I personally like my Spanish podcasts if you wanted to do a little learning on the side. Maybe if you get pro enough we could chat it up when I get back. Sounds like thanksgiving was good. Sad I missed it. I realized today that I won't get to be around for either countries thanksgiving parties. Bummer.  Fun you got a dog. I think you should keep it. lol. And have a great trip. I'm super jealous. haha. Btw, is the trip just for fun, or some kind of like "pre-mission warm-up" thing?? haha. Just kiddin.

Mom - Thanks for the list of Canadian things. They tried to brush most of them off or dispute them somehow, but it was fun. Lo siento on the photos. I didn't take most of them, but I'll try and make sure that they work better if its a problem with the camera and not the printin machine or something. I write in my journal every day (except I forgot last night... ) and haven't missed writing in a day yet. Its not to bad when days are standard and you have a planner with everything you did in it. Thanks for sending Theo's letter. It was funny. The news on Adam was great too. We like to hear about what its like there in our district.  Sorry I forget to send inspirational stuff. The problem is is that about half of my notes are about spanish stuff, and the other half are about being a missionary and aren't very exciting to the outside world. I did find something tho. Hno. Coles told us that in a meeting he had, they taught that "You can't understand how the Lord is doing missionary work unless you understand how the new mormon.org works". I don't know who said it, but the point is that missionary work isn't so much centered on teaching doctrine anymore. The thing that the people of the world either want, or at least the Lord sees fit to give them is more centered on families, and the peace, joy and stability the gospel gives to families. Hope thats alright. I encourage you all to check it out. Its pretty cool.

Erica - Hope you're feeling better!  The food here is not always all that good, but I usually find something good to eat. They usually have about 3 different options of meals and so if you pick the best of the 3 you're usually okay.

Alrighty. So besides conference there isn't all that much to report. Elder Brett Payne left the other day. I missed the time I scheduled to get a pic with him, but caught him in the halway outside my class. So I don't have a pic myself with him, but he at least has one on his camera.  The general authority speaker this week was L. Whitney Clayton from the presidency of the 70. He talked about the stone cut out of the mountain without hands rolling forth. It was pretty good. Next week should be promising tho... they say (there's always rumors flying around about apostles coming mind you), that the week after conference they usually have somebody from the 12 or first presidency stop by. I'll let you know.

Ahhh! I forgot. Big news! Apparently our date of departure has moved up - 20th of October! Thats 5 days earlier than before. Doesn't seem like all that much, but now we realize that we only have like 2 weeks left (16 days i think), and just aren't ready at all! The spanish is coming along nicely, but when its that close your perspective changes. We're kicking our spanish into overdrive this week. My teacher noticed that I can decifer spanish well through context and so I plan on using my strengths as he suggested and do activities from that.

What else. Wednesday we were teaching machines. Taught like 5 lessons in just a couple of hours. I got ANOTHER haircut and will have to get another before I go. Good thing they're free. lol. Oh, and last but not least, it turns out that Elder Humphreys plays dirty soccer. Who knew that when they say "No hands", its not just no touching the ball with your hands... its like no touching people, or lifting your elbows, or getting in peoples way, or pushing or nothing. Ridiculous. lol. Good thing its just MTC soccer. I'm workin on that before someone tries to kill me. haha.

Alright. 8.5 minutes to talk of conference. Great experience! It was fun to bust out of the MTC, see things from a different angle etc. etc. We had a check up in the morning with the MTC president who approved our hair/tie. I passed. We watched conference at the MTC. I really like Elder Hollands talk actually. Probably my favorite talk in conference (oops. guess i should have planned more time for what I actually learned. i guess I'll talk about that next week.). Anyways, I like it cuz i just felt like I was in a very similar situation and owed a LOT to the people in my life that have blessed me. Thanks mom, dad, and everyone else for the things you did/do.  Anyways, it was fun to see the outside world. It was kinda depressing for some of the Utah people but I enjoyed it. We missed most of the afternoon session as we were on the bus and practicing in a smaller theatre in the Conference centre. We practiced, had a nasty snack for "dinner" and then once the place was empty we moved into the choir loft. I got lucky and got to sit by my comp on my right, and a friend from quarentine (elder litton) on my left. It was fun to see and be up there. Couldn't really see any General Authorities, just the tops of the heads of some of the 70. But we got a screen and we could read the teleprompter which was fun. The songs went really well in my opinion. It was a blast. Kinda disapointed in my screen apearances tho. I did a perfect job of watching the conductor/knowing all the words etc. until that stinkin intermediate hymn. Wow. When you sit up there you get some weird echo etc. so it was hard to remember the words, and so i kept peaking, forgot to look happy, and guess what. On the screen the whole time. What gives. lol. But whatever. I just hope I didn't distract anyone with my faces/peaking. Oops. Anyways, all in all a good experience. We weren't allowed to take any notes which was lame and not being able to see meant I had a hard time staying awake at the end but I fought it. Afterwards, no one really came to say hi, but Richard G. Scott came right up close which was cool. Gave us all a thumbs up. lol. Anyways, love to share more but out of time. It was great. Thanks for watching. Don't make too much fun of me. haha.

MTC is sweet. Trying my best to get the language. Keep it real. Love you all.

FAMOUS!

For those of you that couldn't make it to Priesthood Session of general conference, you can see Elder Humphreys singing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir seats.  He is sitting in essentially the very center of the choir.
If you'd like to see him.....
http://www.new.lds.org/
on the left hand side click on 'sessions'
then click on 'Priesthood session'

When the video starts to play, you can jump ahead to the congregational hymn at approximately 48:00 minutes.  Right at the beginning, the choir director is facing the congregation, and Ross's head can be seen in the lower left corner of the screen.  He is visible for quite a while, even when the chorister is shrunk to show other views.  In that song he appears again right at the end of the song.

In the closing song, at approximately 1:50:56 Elder Humphreys (complete with suit, tie, and badge), appears in the lower right portion of the screen.  In all the group shots he can be found in the center once you know where to find him and his companion, (who is to the left of Ross, as we look at him).

It was nice to see him - as a missionary!  Can't wait to get his letter on Monday.

Post publishing edit:  Barb just sent me a screen shot of him singing - thanks Barb!
There he is - bottom left corner :)
