Week 1 with Elder..... McCain

Hola! Hows everybody back home? Glad to hear that you all had a great week and that everyone is fine and dandy. We had a good week here too. Glad that you didn´t come across any dead bodies, that you had a blast in the parades and the like. In response to your letter dad: You can watch YouTube on our TV? How legit is that?. I liked the comments on the talent show. haha. Small town talent is always the best. I asked my new comp (more on him later) about the country singers and sadly he didn´t know them. But I liked the coment where you said it was pretty good considering it was country. haha. He liked that too, but more because it sounded like something I would say, rather than something he agreed with. lol. Super fun that you all get to go father daughter camping. Have a blast! Camping... its like living in Paraguay, but on purpose. Hopefully its not too chilly or nothing. (its wierd because its winter here. Can´t get my head around differnt seasons).

Anyways. As for this week. It went really well. Monday we spent the day saying goodbye to people. Good stuff. Made for an unusual kinda day. If only we could get that many people crying on a regular basis, I think the church would grow a lot faster. All the members where really sad to see Elder Chatelain go. He was a good guy. Hopefully somebody actually cries when I leave too. We´ll see.

Tuesday. We had to leave early for our big meeting thing. Elder Chatelain conviniently told me AS we were leaving the house that even though we had to catch the bus right away, that maybe I should bring my suit. Well it was too late. And guess what. It turned out that he should have warned me sooner because I was the ONLY guy there without a suit. How embarassing. Elder Chatelain got lucky because he had all of his luggage with him and so therefore had his jacket too. He was nice enough to lend me a sweater so I didn´t stick out so bad. Fortunately President wasn´t ticked or anything, but ugh. Before the mission I never wanted to be over dressed for anything. Now its now fun to be overdressed. Wierd. But yeah. Had our quarterly inverviews with president. Crasy that we´ve already passed another quarter. Had a great meeting. All stoked to be a better teacher now and everything. I really like those meetings because you always come out pumped. President says Hi to Dad and the family btw. lol.

Wednesday we travelled into town with President. Kinda wierd to just have one on one time with him and his wife in the car. Believe it or not, they are actually just real people, with super spiritual skills. Kinda cool. Headed in to the office to meet my new comp. Elder McCain. From Alpine Utah. Good guy. Knows how to cook really good, likes country music.... I don´t know what else to say about him. I´ll send you a picture. Hes a good guy though. Our personalities don´t always mesh exactly (not sure if we´re really different or just too much alike lol), but its going to be a good experience for me to be more patient and thoughtful and the like. He´s a brand new senior comp and so he´s got a lot of responsibility just put on him. It´ll be a good change, I´m excited. We missed the bus because Elder Chatelain left with our phone but fortunately we were able to catch another one and get home safe. Fun stuff. Saw Elder Patterson too for a short while, but we didn´t get to talk too much unfortunately.

We had a good week of work after that though. I kinda feel like a senior comp because I had to show him around and I know everyone well. It been good. Had some good success too. We were able to talk about sabath day with an old investigator, and this week she FINALLY came to church. Fun. And we´ve already started working a lot more with the members and so we´re seeing success with that. But yeah. Trying new things and so far its worked out well.

Anyways, outa time again (its just going by quicker every week). But yeah. Sunday was crasy. I gave the lesson, directed and gave a talk. And then there were some issues with some people, and it all came back to me. Lots of responsibility all of a sunden here. But its good. I´m liking it a lot. I don´t worry about my spanish skills any more like I did before, and now that I can communicate with out much holding me back, I feel like I´m able to connect a lot more with the people and my personality can come out. I´m going to hit a year mark here soon, but I think the second half is going to be even better than the first. I´m excited. But yeah. Things are going great. I´m doing good. ´We´re having a blast and hopefully we´ll start seeing even more success in the comming weeks. Glad you´re all having fun with vacations and the like. Stay safe, have fun, choose the right and be good missionaries. Love you lots!

Last Week with Elder Chatelain

Cute kids havin fun

Cleaning the Church. Again. It doesn´t have real good walls and there´s a thick layer of dust every Saturday.  Thats dust in the air. lol

Have to whipe off all the chairs or you get dust bottoms

The San Pedro gang. Basically all of our most active members

Me, Elder Chatelain and Gabriel.

Hola! Hows it going? We had a great week here. Glad to hear that you´re all having a fantastic summer. As usual, somehow all my time disapeared, but I´m going to try and say what I can here as quick as possible...

Monday was fun. Elder Chatelains last P-day. Played some pool with one of the youth in our ward named Gabriel. It was extra fun because the cue ball wasn´t really round (all bumpy), the cues just had hard plastic tips on them, the table wasn´t flat, and nobody could agree on the rules. haha. But we had fun. Somehow luck was on my side and I won all 3 games I played. How bout that eh? lol.

I forgot to mention last week about how we gave a bunch of blessings in just a few days last week. It was really cool to see this week as we came across those people and they were in good health. There was even one guy who we saw out walking in the streets, and I don´t think he´s been able to walk any farther than around the block for probably the whole time I´ve been here. Really cool to see how willing the Lord is to bless these people, and the power that there is in the priesthood. I think sometimes that I don´t have enough faith in things like that, and it was great to see how the blessings were really manifested. A great faith and testimony builder.

In case I have forgotten to mention it, this was my last full week with Elder Chatelain. He goes home this Thursday morning. Awesomely, he wasn´t too incredibly trunky, and we were able to still get lots of work done. Good guy. This is our last regular day. Tomorrow we have a training meeting in Santani with President, and then Elder Chatelain will be off to Asuncion. I´m excited to see who my next comp will be. Hopefully he´s a good hard worker, but you never know what you´re going to get. I´ve really enjoyed my time with Elder Chatelain. I´ll be happy though to have a comp who´s not so close to the end of his mission, because its hard not to waste time thinking about your own homecoming when thats all that your comp can really think about. lol. But yeah. I have an exciting week ahead of me. We´ll see what happens.

Lots of fĂștbol (soccer lol) this week. Thats all good if you´re Paraguayan, but annoying if your not. Apparently they´re doing good. Makes it hard to work though. Gave Elder Chatelain a little time to pack. I hope you´re all staying on top of the Copa Americana though and watch Paraguays next game for me. haha.

Random thing from my studies - I´ve always really wondered why we don´t use the JST as our official bible. I don´t know if I´ve mentioned this before. But I´ve been reading the NT lately, and its cool because there is TONNEs of good stuff that you only find in the JST. But something interesting is that because we don´t use that version beside in the footnotes, people know that we´re not just using our own bible, but that we believe in the exact same bible that we do. I think its the Jehovas Witnesses that use an edited bible, and it just takes away from a lot of the credibility with people. So thats something good. I can use the same bible as my investigators, but find aditional inspiration from the JST. Good stuff.

What else. Wow. We bought WHITE eggs the other day. its been really wierd. All eggs here are straight from the chicken, and so they´re usually brown. Different.

Wow. I´m totally all out of time. Sending pics uses up time than I thought. You´ll have to let me know if you like longer letters, or pictures more....

But yeah. Basically it was a normal week. But we spent a lot of time saying goodbye to people. Taking pictures. Doning a little packing and cleaning... Thats about it. Nothing too crasy.

But we´re having a good time, doing our jobs and loving it. We´ll see what happens this week. Really quick:Happy B-day Peter! Congrats. Super crasy that your so old! haha. Is that Bradeon Lyons thats going to Florida? Cool beans. Did you guys get any pics at HP? Sounded pretty creative! Have fun with the New TV. Try not to break this one k? lol. Have fun at Magrath days! Good times. Thanks for the recipie. I´ll let you know how it goes.

Anyways, gotta run. Love you tonnes! Have a great week!!

Back to work

Hola. Hows it going? Things are doing fabulously here. We finally got back to San Pedro. Its good being home. I like having my own bed, and not having to live out of a suitcase. Walking around, getting exercise and not being so stir-crasy. Not to mention SHARING THE GOSPEL. Thats the best part. Our investigators and members were all starting to think that we had forgotten about them. Its been nice to get out and teach some lessons again. It meant that the work this week was a little slow because we were just visiting everyone to appologize and make sure they hadn´t gone apostate or anything since we left (10 days is a long time for a missionary to be away from his work!), but now we´re back into full swing. It was a nice little holiday, but as always, good to be back. The wierd thing is though that now Elder Chatelain is down to his last 10 days as an official missionary (it´ll probably be a little more like 12 or 13 before he gets home). Trunky. lol. He´s already got his homecoming talk all finished and mostly memorized. Spends a lot of time looking at pictures and thinking about buying souvenirs etc... but we´re working hard. haha. Working till the very end. Good stuff. It makes me even more glad that dad will be coming to pick me up, because I´ll be able to put off all (or hopefully most) of my trunkyness until that week. Side note on that: Dad - how long do you want to stay here? 3 days, a week, 10 days?? I´m not really sure what´d be best, but it might have some influence on when I think that we should plan on you coming. Wierd to think that in not very long, every one of my comps so far will be back at home. Elder Call leaves at the end of September and then that´ll be it. I´ll be an oldie! Messed up!

But yeah. Good stuff. This week started out in the office still. Monday I got to eat at the nicest restaurant in all of Paraguay. Again! I´m so lucky. Super good. We´ll defs be going there again before I leave. Paulistas brazilain BBQ. 30$ a person - expensive! lol. Got to also be in the office for change day. Saw lots of people coming and going. A good number of my MTC buds have been going up to sr comp now. Scary thought. Elder Patterson is now Sr as well, and we got SO CLOSE to being comps! Not really, but he´s comps with one of my MTC roommates. Shucks! Oh well. Anyways, we had to do a couple more tests before we left for home, so we got to go to the hospital AGAIN. Thankfully we´re done now. While we were waiting for results though, some guy randomly bought us some soup though, so that was pretty cool. I didn´t even get to ask him if he was a member or what though. Thankfully it wasn´t poisoned, and hopefully he gets blessed for his service. Good stuff. It was also fun to be in the office as all the Newbies showed up. Its funny because they know a lot already, but some stuff is just so new to them still. They don´t really know whats up yet. Reminds me of when I was a newbie. Made me think of all of the things that I now take for granted. Like when I was on the bus, I realized that to have random fires all along the roadside probably isn´t normal back at home. But here, there isn´t really any forest fire risks, so everyone just prunes their trees back, and then have giant bonfires. Different. Or how all yogurt here is drinkable, more liquidy yogurt like yops. Nothing important or all that special, but just things that are different that just become normal after a while.

Random note as well. My half brother of the mission (my trainers other train-y) got sent to the Argentinan mission a couple weeks ago because he got dengue for the second time in his mission, and he´s got even less time here than me. Wow. Thankfully I´ve been blessed to have good health and luck (if you can call it that), up until this point. Good stuff

The world cup isn´t happening this year, but there is some south american cup. You think it wouldn´t be that big of a deal, but it is. We´ve been told not to watch the games under any circumstances, and so that often means that if Paraguay is playing, they would rather that we were just in the house studying than being out, because EVERYONE will be watching the game. Ridiculous. But it worked out to our advantage this week as I had extra time to work on my talk for sunday.

As for studies, something that I started this week is try to memorize my patriarchal blessing. Its been pretty cool. I still plan on reading it after, but it forces you to really analyze it word for word. It also means that while I´m out walking, I´ve had that on the brain, rather then wasting time thinking about nothing. Good stuff.

Sunday went really well. Our investigator came, so hopefully she´ll be able to be baptized soon. Things ran smoothly and I think that my class and talk went well. It was nicer this week and so people actually came, because the cold wasn´t a worry. Also had a visiter from Asuncion. He came up for work and after he drove us around in his car to do visits. He was a little bit crasy, but we met a lot of his friends and got lots of visits done so that was great. Had one of the scarier moments of my mission while he filled up the van/car thing while it was running.... but we didn´t blow up, so that was good. I´m actually kinda glad that we don´t have cars though. This place just isn´t made for them.

But yeah. All in all a good week. Good to spend time with the members and investigators again. Great to share the gospel! I feel like an old person who´s just super happy to get to be a missionary again. I got all this new energy after my long vacation. Hopefully Elder Chatelain can keep going strong, and then my next comp will be a hard worker, and we can start seeing continued success. See the blessings of our work.

But yeah. Gotta run. Crasy that the Stampede is already here. I never thought I´d miss it. Good times. Feels like just yesterday that I was there. Camps. How fun. I don´t think people here get the idea of camping.... its kinda like camping just living here, but just with not as many fun activities. lol. Nice work with the camera. haha. It made me chuckle. And easy with all the new accesories (aka glasses)! I won´t be able to recognize any of you when I get back! Not good!

But thats it for today. Love you all. Thanks for everything. Have a great week!

Love,

Elder Humphreys

6th Man

Howdy there everybody! Hope you all had a fantastic week. Sounds like summer is in full swing. Fun stuff!

But don't you all worry too much. I've been having quite the vacation myself. I think this has probably been one of the most unusual weeks of my mission. To explain quickly, Elder Chatelain hasn't fully recovered just yet. So I sent my letter last week from Santani, and since then I've only slept like... 1 night in my own bed, and right now, I'm writing my letter from the office of the mission in Asuncion.  We've been chilling basically all week in the office. Elder Chatelain has been ordered to rest, but we've been doing all we can to help out in the office. I feel like I've almost been adopted into the office family... but not entirely. haha. I've given myself the official office title of "6th Man", because like in basketball, I kinda get to be the first substitute in any situation. haha. I think we'll be heading back home shortly, but until then... we're still just rockin it in the office. As we speak I'm typing on the office computer, so forgive me if any of this doesn't make sense - tonnes of people are here for p-day and I'm having a hard time concentrating. lol

But anyways. For a quick run down of the week. We spent all morning in the hospital as they pumped drugs into Elder Chatelain and tried to keep him alive.... Not that he was really going to die, but he was in a lot of pain. They ran some tests and told him to just drink water and take pain killers. But we don't really trust the medical system here entirely, so we headed in to Asuncion the next day. I was really happy that I wasn't the one sick... the hospitals are pretty sketchy here. For the most part they know whats up, but they just don't have the same kind of sanitary cleanliness here. But besides that. He survived. The only other cool things of the day were that it got SUPER cold that night before and we were even able to find a little bit of frost on the top of the trees in the morning. How legit is that! I'm loving the cold weather, but its throwing me off thinking about you guys running around and golfing and stuff, because its hard to imagine it warm there. lol. We also played football - I convinced them to use the Canadian sized football even which was cool - and I had a blast. I'm saying that we should start up one of those American Thanksgiving football traditions when I get home or something, because I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Sure felt it the next day though. haha

But yeah. Tuesday we took the bus into town. Got there and spent the rest of the day waiting on the ultrasound person and for results and whatnot. Finally got to our home for the week in the night, and started day 1 of Burger King dinners. We ate out a lot this week. Not going to lie. Its hard to eat good here in the big town.... lol.

Oh. Fun news from the office though. Newbies are coming in. And we're getting another Canadian! Yay! A Kurt Bennett from Cardston I think. Pretty cool. Don't think that I know him from before or anything, but right now I think theres just me and elder Patterson and one other guy, so it'll be good to have another Canadian in the country.

The doctors told Elder Chatelain had to rest for the next couple of days. So that meant that we spent a lot of time in the office. Bugging the office Elders. I did what I could to help. That meant that we ran a lot of errands so that only one office Elder had to leave his duties, and so that was fun. They took us to all sorts of fun places. The store, their houses, the bank. Wherever. But that also meant that we got to see the fun places, like the restaurant owned by some Texan guy. I got a legit Brisket sandwich at the TEXAS BBQ. Fantastic. All in all I've blown a lot of money this week. Because, you gotta eat right? lol. I think we're going to be really short on money at the end of the month again. But more on that later.

Spent some late nights at the office too. Had to babysit the guy that puts in all of the baptisimal records. Watched ALL of the movies in the office. I now know all about the Doctrine and Covenants movies, saw all the goodbye missionary movies, and now know all about the rules for driving and such. Funny movie. Ridiculous though. Not going to lie, I kinda started going crasy. Sitting around is overrated. I missed walking around and staying active.

The next day was about the same. I ate at burger king 3 times in as many days. I miss Paraguayan food now. And I'm fat.

All in all, kind of a sad waste of time. But I think we've helped a little and did what we could to make things easier here. I took a bunch of photos on Google Earth so that everyone will now have maps of their areas. Thats kinda cool.

Canada day went fantastically. Wished everyone a Happy Canada day. Some accepted it, some hated on it. Oh well. By the way, happy 4th of July. Along with that, a big shout out to GRANDMA HUMPHREYS and CHLOE as well. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Love you lots and hope they pass fantastically!!! The other cool part of Canada day was that I was able to talk to Elder Patterson as he called to wish me a happy day. Sounds like he's doing well. Always great to talk.

But yeah. We realized that without being in San Pedro, there wouldn't be any church. And that can't happen. We always promise people that there will ALWAYS be church, and so we had to keep our promise. Elder Chatelain had to do more tests, so I borrowed an extra guy in the office - Elder Sean Lane from California - and we went back to San Pedro for one day. It was quite the road trip. Traveled in 6 hours. Worked Saturday to tell everyone that we didn't forget about them and tell them that church still was going to happen. Then we had church. Made a visit or two, and turned around and went home. Fun stuff. LOTS of time on the bus. It was my first Sunday leading church on my own. Fun stuff. Kinda went a little rough, but hopefully it'll get better in the coming weeks. And our bus broke down on the way home. It took 11 hours to get to Asuncion. We left at 4 in the afternoon and showed up at 3 in the morning. Not fun.

But yeah. Hopefully Elder Chatelain and me will be able to go back tomorrow. That is as long as there aren't changes because otherwise we might have to stay even longer. Messy stuff. Its been just a whirlwind of adventure. Quite the week. Don't think it'll happen again in the future.

But yeah. Out of time. Sorry that there wasn't anything inspirational or all that cool. It was a really weird week. I can't wait to get back out there. Not going to lie. But at least I'm great friends with the office Elders now so I can call on them anytime I want a favor :) haha.

But yeah. Gotta run. But thanks for your letters. Great stuff. Congratulations to Emma! Nice work. Congratulations to everyone else for doing well in school. Now enjoy that time off! I liked all the funny gossip lady stories. Fun stuff with the ranch (love that place...miss it), and golf. Another tradition I'm excited to have again back when I get home. I can't believe they aren't having the Stampede breakfast. That was my fav. Oh well.

But don't you worry. Yah, I miss those little things. But I'm having a blast. Things are doing really well. Da gusto to be a missionary! I just can't wait to get back to work. Glad you're all doing well. Hope you have another fantastic week. I'm so happy to hear you're all well. Love you tonnes and I'll write you again next week!

Love,

Elder Humphreys
